Herbert slams rural post office closures
22 January 2009
Rural England has lost one-third of its entire post office network since 2000, according to new figures obtained by the Conservatives.
Rural branches have closed at a much greater rate than those in urban areas, with serious consequences for often isolated communities.
Commenting on the figures, Shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, Nick Herbert said:
“Post offices often lie at the heart of rural communities and losses on this scale have been immensely damaging. Thousands more people are now more isolated without easy access to important services. The Government simply doesn't understand the value of this public service or how such changes harm rural areas."
