Royal Cornwall Show

4 June 2009

Nick Herbert MP, Shadow Defra Secretary attended the Royal Cornwall Show where he urged banks to be sensitive to the difficulties being experienced by dairy farmers affected by the collapse of Dairy Farmers of Britain.

Nick, who held talks with NFU President Peter Kendall, said:

"This is a matter of real concern. I would urge the banks to stand by our dairy farmers and show some sympathy to the short-term problems they are facing. Everything must be done to help affected farmers find alternative outlets for their milk and get through this immensely difficult period."

Nick also announced that a Conservative Government would put the 'F' back into farming.

He said: "It's fundamentally wrong that the world's farming or agriculture are missing from the title of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. And it you check its website, again those words are missing. Instead it talks about environmental concerns."
